Candle Care

PRODUCT CARE.

Our products don’t take much looking after but there are a few simple tips and tricks to ensure you get the best results for when you’re ready to kick back and relax with a MAKE candle.

TIP 1: Before you burn

Remove all packaging before lighting. Always burn on a safe surface and space. Never leave a lit candle unattended and within reach of children and pets. Candles should not be burned for longer than 4 hours at a time.

TIP 2: Candle prep

For optimal burn and to ensure a smaller and safe flame height, trim the wick to 1/4” with a wick trimmer or scissors. You can also gently snap off the ash or burnt wood along the top edge of the wood wick and light as usual.

TIP 3: Initial burn

The first burn of a candle is the most important! A common problem amongst candle lovers is ‘tunneling’. This is when a candle burns down the center, leaving wax around the edges of the container and creating a tunnel-like shape. Over time, this will make the candle nearly impossible to burn. The wick will not receive enough air to burn steadily, and the melted wax will pool and drown out the flame.

This issue can be easily avoided by staying away from short burn times. The first burn in particular is crucial. Burning your candle for 2 to 3 hours on its initial run will allow the wax to melt all the way out to the edges of its container. This will ensure that when your wax cools, the surface of the candle will remain even.

TIP 4: Repurpose

At the end of the candles life, when only 1/2” of wax remains it is time to say goodbye! If there is not enough wax left to absorb the heat, your jar could overheat and potentially crack. Our wax is natural and biodegradable, so it is very easy to clean out and upcycle. Just scoop out the remaining wax and hand wash in warm soap water.

Our hope is that you reuse your empty vessels as planters for succulents or starter pots for plants and herbs.
